UBPS completed a two-year process that engaged more than 25 campus stakeholders to shape an innovative new beverage relationship with PepsiCo. The ten-year agreement, finalized after the company’s successful RFP bid, will bring significant revenue to campus and address beverage-related sustainability and nutrition concerns. The relationship will also deliver capital investment, favorable pricing, and emergency supplies to campus stakeholders. Separately, PepsiCo will also fund scholarships for Berkeley students.
Eliminates Single-Use Plastics
Approximately 90% of PepsiCo's beverages sold on campus will be in non-single use containers by January 1, 2024. By 2030, the company will completely eliminate single-use plastics from its campus beverage offerings.
Provides Revenue
With the university budget fragile, more than 15 units will share approximately $8.5M in revenue over the life of the agreement.
Funds Sustainability Projects
The most sustainable university in the world will benefit from $300,000 to address campus climate change priorities. The funding may only be used for projects with a material impact towards Berkeley’s green goals.
Caps Price Increases
At a time of sticky inflation and worrisome student debt, the agreement limits annual price increases, protecting student budgets and softening university cost pressures.
Adheres to Nutrition Policy
PepsiCo will supply a product mix that complies with university limitations on sugar and caffeine content, as well as product sizes, shelf placement and pricing. The company has also committed to biannual compliance reviews of its campus beverage portfolio.
Supplies Emergency Water
In a disaster-prone era, PepsiCo will advance 1,300 cases of water for use in crisis response.
Upgrades Equipment
As beverage technology innovation accelerates to address climate and health concerns, campus outlets will stay in the game with an equipment refresh and the introduction of PepsiCo’s SodaStream Professional platform at select locations.
Supports Student Scholars
Independently of the performance of the beverage partnership, PepsiCo will donate $300,000 in no-strings attached scholarship funding for Berkeley students.
