Berkeley’s Discovery initiative reorients the student experience to prioritize creative exploration and inquiry-driven learning. Educational opportunities beyond the classroom complement this revised curriculum and foster personal growth. In FY23, UBPS partners contributed to professional development and community engagement teams and activities that provided students access, information, and funding to further develop their interests and shape their intellectual and career journeys.
Building Skills
A hub for student life beyond the classroom, the Student Union promotes skills development and creativity through community-focused services and programs. Upwards of $400,000 in partner funding enhanced these student experiences with arts, media, and other hands-on programming throughout the year.
Working Together
Applying academic learnings to organized efforts to change the world allows students to practice teamwork in service of higher goals. Bank of the West infused $20,000 into 10 student groups making their marks in fields from sustainability to women’s empowerment, building students’ changemaking skills and bettering the Berkeley community.
Going Pro
Conference and professional association participation are fundamental to the professionalization of graduate students. Unfortunately, the costs associated with such participation are frequently prohibitive for Berkeley’s masters and PhD candidates. Peet’s helped to address this gap with $12,500 in funding to help 37 students across 19 units attend conferences or join professional associations in FY23.
