Growing up in a single-parent household, the youngest of four, Daisy Medina was convinced there was more to life than the everyday problems at home. She dreamed of being successful, traveling the world and learning more about opportunities that life had to offer. Medina was one of 12 UC Berkeley student recipients recognized at the 16-17 Bank of the West Bear Opportunity Scholarship Reception held this past January. The Bank of the West Bear Opportunity Endowment fund annually awards 10 merit-based scholarships to students who demonstrate financial need and a passion for social responsibility and entrepreneurship.

Berkeley Student Affairs Philanthropy

We recently welcomed Bank of the West, the official bank of UC Berkeley, and Peet’s Coffee to the University Partnership Program (UPP) in recognition of their overall alignment with the university’s mission and values. The partnerships help fund student programs across campus, and Peet’s and Bank of the West will also provide significant merit- and need-based scholarship funds.

As company internship recruitment begins earlier every year, students find themselves searching for opportunities prior to the start of a semester. In addition to the campus hosting multiple events, student organizations are also helping their peers find personal and professional development opportunities by connecting with companies through information sessions, weekly workshops, speaker panels, and more.

When seeking out potential interns for Bank of the West, Recruiting Manager Elijah Padua emphasized the mutually beneficial relationship with UC Berkeley noting the bank “provides summer internships to UC Berkeley students who in turn provide fresh perspectives and new ideas to the bank.” Of the 29 interns hosted this past summer, it comes as no surprise that 11 of these positions were secured by UC Berkeley students.

Bank of the West has opened its doors to more international students this semester as its partnership with UC Berkeley continues to offer financial literacy training and accessibility to students. In addition, the bank has funded many programs, including 24 student scholarships, the financial literacy program and the UC Berkeley Food Pantry.

UC Berkeley students holding Under Armour sponsored yoga matLast Thursday, June 1, marked the official launch of the campuswide Under Armour apparel partnership. The day started with the inaugural Wellness Celebration hosted by Recreational Sports, where over 300 plus students, faculty, staff and community members celebrated by sweating it out to Zumba, tai chi and yoga.
